My response, at first, was to stay home. As February approached, things were cranking up. I had classes to teach and could not avoid the Pavilion forever: it’s my workplace. I co-manage the pottery studio with its beautiful arched windows that look out towards the, now, infamous bridge.
Strolling past our windows, now, amongst the swimmers and surfers, are police.
We had no spirit in us for marketing or social-media posting, and yet, as our term drew closer, bookings began streaming in. It wasn’t – as we had feared – that people were staying away. They spoke with their feet. They arrived at the studio and have kept arriving since our term started. We have shared wheels, tables, tools and, yes, tears too.
This is what gives me hope.
This is what inspires me that renewal and rebuilding are possible.
The community of Bondi have spoken.
They have chosen to come together, pick up clay, use their hands and create.
They have chosen to walk, jog and play volleyball on the undulating Bondi sand.
They have chosen to go out in the waves again.
